My Favourite Things for Home Organizing

You do not need fancy systems or a house full of matching containers to be organized. The best organizing tools are the ones that make your life easier, reduce mental load, and support how you already live — especially in busy homes with kids, ADHD brains, and full schedules.

Over the years of organizing homes (and managing my own), I’ve found a handful of go-to items that I come back to again and again. These are my favourite things for organizing because they’re flexible, forgiving, and realistic.

Remember that it is never a one size fits all.

  1. Clear Bins- A classic for a reason. When you can see what you own, you’re far more likely to use it and far less likely to overbuy. They remove the mental step of “what’s in here again?” which is huge for anyone dealing with decision fatigue or ADHD. And remember, even if they are clear we still label, label, label.
  2. Open baskets for high traffic areas- Closed storage looks nice, but open baskets are often more functional, especially for everyday items. If something needs to be put away quickly and often, it shouldn’t require extra steps. Also a great option for neurodiverse folks, when we remove a step (even as simple as a lid) it can help achieve our goals of tidying up faster. Think entry ways, mudrooms, living rooms, playrooms, laundry rooms, kids rooms.
  3. Drawer Dividers- Drawer dividers are one of the simplest upgrades that make a huge difference. When everything has a “lane,” drawers stay functional much longer — even when you’re rushing.
  4. Matching Hangers- I know what you are thinking. I am not going to toss perfectly good hangers to buy a bunch of matching ones. If buying new hangers is not in the budget, Try and group together the ones that do match. Put one type in each closet or use one type for specific clothing. Visually it makes the closet look a lot tidier. If hangers are in your budget it is important to evaluate which are the best to get. Personally I prefer the thin felt hangers. Unless you have a Kardashian closet, they take up less space, clothes hang nicely on them and they prevent slipping. However these are not heavy duty, So avoid hanging heavy suits coats and jackets on them.
  5. Turntables? Lazy Susans?- Whatever you want to call them, these are great for inside kitchen cupboards and even the fridge! I personally use them for supplements, tea, medication and condiments or jars in the back of the fridge.
